What this policy covers
This policy explains how we collect, use, store, and share personal information when you visit our website, leave a comment, contact us, or subscribe to our emails.
We have a worldwide audience. Privacy laws can vary depending on where you live, and some visitors may have additional rights under their local laws (see “Your rights”).
Information we collect
Depending on how you use the site, we may collect:
- Information you provide (for example your name, email address, and message content when you comment, contact us, or subscribe).
- Comments information (details in the “Comments” section below).
- Website usage and technical information such as IP address, browser type, device information, pages viewed, approximate location, and how you interact with the site.
- Cookies and tracking data (details in the “Cookies and tracking” section below).
Please avoid submitting sensitive personal information through forms or comments.
How we use your information
We use personal information to:
- run and maintain the website
- respond to enquiries submitted through the site
- publish and moderate comments
- send newsletters/updates (if you subscribe)
- understand website traffic and improve the site (analytics)
- track affiliate link performance
- protect the website from spam and abuse
- comply with legal obligations
Comments
When visitors leave comments on the site, we collect the data shown in the comments form, and also the visitor’s IP address and browser user agent string to help spam detection.
Gravatar
An anonymised string created from your email address (also called a hash) may be provided to the Gravatar service to check if you use it. The Gravatar service privacy policy is available at: https://automattic.com/privacy/. After approval of your comment, your profile picture may be visible to the public in the context of your comment.
Media
If you upload images to the website, avoid uploading images with embedded location data (EXIF GPS). Visitors may be able to download and extract location data from images on the website.
Contact forms (WPForms)
If you contact us through forms on the site, we collect the information you submit (such as name, email address, and message content) so we can respond. We may also collect technical data (like IP address) to help prevent spam and abuse.
Email/newsletter (Mailchimp)
If you subscribe to our newsletter, we collect your email address (and any other details you choose to provide) to send you updates.
Mailchimp may also collect information about how you interact with emails (for example opens and clicks) to help measure and improve email performance.
You can unsubscribe at any time using the link in our emails or by contacting us.
Analytics (Google Analytics)
We use Google Analytics to understand how visitors use the site and to improve content and performance. Google Analytics typically collects information such as:
- pages visited and time spent on pages
- referral source (how you found our site)
- device and browser information
- approximate location
- interactions with site content
Google Analytics may use cookies or similar technologies to collect and process this information.
Advertising
We use Mediavine to manage third-party programmatic advertising on this website. Mediavine may serve personalised or non-personalised advertisements and may use first-party and third-party cookies, tags, pixels, beacons, and similar technologies to deliver, measure, limit the frequency of, and improve advertising.
Mediavine Programmatic Advertising (Ver 1.1)
When Mediavine advertising is active, Mediavine and its advertising partners may process information such as IP address, device and browser details, operating system information, language, approximate or general location information, referral source, browsing and usage data, cookie or advertising identifiers, and interactions with pages and advertisements. Depending on consent and applicable law, this information may be used to measure advertising, create or use audience segments, and provide interest-based advertising.
Visitors in regions with applicable privacy laws may be shown consent or privacy controls provided by Mediavine. These may include options to accept, reject, or manage consent and, where applicable, a “Do Not Sell or Share My Personal Information” control. Choosing not to receive personalised advertising does not necessarily remove advertising; non-personalised advertisements may still be shown.
For more information about Mediavine’s data practices, advertising partners, and privacy choices, see Mediavine’s Legal and Privacy Center.
Affiliate links and tracking
Some pages include affiliate links. If you click an affiliate link and make a purchase, we may receive a commission at no extra cost to you. We also use a self-hosted Affiliate Attribution system to manage some affiliate links and understand which content leads to affiliate activity. When a managed affiliate link is used, the system may store a random click token, managed link and destination identifiers, the affiliate network, the source page path on this site, and the time of the click. It does not store raw visitor IP addresses by default. Order and commission information supplied by affiliate networks may also be stored for attribution and reporting, including provider order identifiers, order status, sale value, commission value, currency, and lifecycle timestamps. We control how long this attribution information is retained; removing the plugin does not delete it by default unless we explicitly opt in to destructive uninstall.
We participate in affiliate programs and networks including (but not limited to):
- Amazon Associates
- AWIN
- AliExpress affiliate programs / networks
- and other similar affiliate platforms
These programs may use cookies or tracking parameters to attribute your purchase to our link. This may involve collecting technical information such as device/browser details and referral data.
Spam protection and security (Akismet and reCAPTCHA)
We use Akismet to help detect spam comments. This may involve processing technical data such as your IP address, browser user agent, and comment details.
We may also implement Google reCAPTCHA in future to help protect forms from spam and abuse. If enabled, reCAPTCHA may collect information about your device and interactions with the site to determine whether activity appears legitimate.
Cookies and tracking
Cookies are small files stored on your device. We use cookies for core site functions and analytics, and third-party services we use may also set cookies or use similar technologies. This includes Mediavine and its advertising partners when advertising is active, subject to the privacy choices and consent requirements that apply to you.
WordPress cookies
If you leave a comment, you may opt-in to saving your name, email address and website in cookies for your convenience. These cookies last for one year.
If you visit our login page, we set a temporary cookie to determine if your browser accepts cookies. This cookie contains no personal data and is discarded when you close your browser.
When you log in, we set cookies to save your login information and display preferences. Login cookies last for two days, and screen options cookies last for a year. If you select “Remember Me”, your login persists for two weeks. If you log out, login cookies are removed.
If you edit or publish an article, an additional cookie may be saved in your browser. This cookie includes no personal data and indicates the post ID of the article you edited. It expires after 1 day.
Managing cookies
You can control cookies through your browser settings (for example blocking or deleting cookies). Some features of the site may not work properly if you disable cookies.
Embedded content from other websites
Articles on this site may include embedded content (for example videos, images, or articles). Embedded content behaves as if you visited the other website.
These websites may collect data about you, use cookies, embed additional third-party tracking, and monitor your interaction with embedded content, including if you have an account and are logged in to that website.
Who we share your data with
We share personal information only as needed to operate the site and deliver services. This can include sharing with:
- website hosting and infrastructure providers
- Google (Google Analytics and potentially reCAPTCHA)
- Mediavine and its advertising partners (for advertising, measurement, consent, and privacy controls)
- Mailchimp (newsletter delivery and analytics)
- spam prevention services (Akismet)
- affiliate networks and partners (for attribution and reporting)
- IT and support providers involved in maintaining the site
Password resets
If you request a password reset, your IP address may be included in the reset email.
Overseas disclosure (international data transfers)
Because we use service providers such as Google, Mailchimp, Mediavine, and advertising partners, and because we have a worldwide audience, personal information may be processed or stored outside your country, including outside Australia (for example in the United States or other regions where these providers operate).
We take reasonable steps to use reputable providers, but overseas recipients may be subject to different privacy laws.
How long we retain your information
- Comments: If you leave a comment, the comment and its metadata are retained indefinitely to help recognise and approve follow-up comments automatically.
- Registered users (if enabled): If you create an account (if available), we store the personal information you provide in your user profile. You can view, edit, or delete your personal information at any time (except you cannot change your username). Site administrators can also view and edit that information.
- Forms and enquiries: We keep enquiries for as long as needed to respond and manage records, and then may delete or de-identify them unless we need to keep them for legal, security, or operational purposes.
- Newsletter: We keep your subscription details until you unsubscribe or ask us to delete them, subject to any legal or record-keeping requirements.
Your rights
You may request access to the personal information we hold about you, ask us to correct it, or ask us to delete it in certain circumstances.
If you have an account on this site, or have left comments, you can request an exported file of the personal data we hold about you. You can also request we erase personal data we hold about you. This does not include data we are required to keep for administrative, legal, or security purposes.
Because we have a worldwide audience, additional rights may apply depending on where you live (for example rights to object to certain processing or request data portability). If you believe you have additional rights, contact us and we will respond as required by applicable law.
Where your data is sent
Visitor comments may be checked through an automated spam detection service.
