We use personal information to:

  • run and maintain the website
  • respond to enquiries submitted through the site
  • publish and moderate comments
  • send newsletters/updates (if you subscribe)
  • understand website traffic and improve the site (analytics)

Comments

When visitors leave comments on the site, we collect the data shown in the comments form, and also the visitor’s IP address and browser user agent string to help spam detection.

Gravatar

An anonymised string created from your email address (also called a hash) may be provided to the Gravatar service to check if you use it. The Gravatar service privacy policy is available at: https://automattic.com/privacy/. After approval of your comment, your profile picture may be visible to the public in the context of your comment.

Media

If you upload images to the website, avoid uploading images with embedded location data (EXIF GPS). Visitors may be able to download and extract location data from images on the website.

Contact forms (WPForms)

If you contact us through forms on the site, we collect the information you submit (such as name, email address, and message content) so we can respond. We may also collect technical data (like IP address) to help prevent spam and abuse.

Email/newsletter (Mailchimp)

If you subscribe to our newsletter, we collect your email address (and any other details you choose to provide) to send you updates.

Mailchimp may also collect information about how you interact with emails (for example opens and clicks) to help measure and improve email performance.

You can unsubscribe at any time using the link in our emails or by contacting us.

Analytics (Google Analytics)

We use Google Analytics to understand how visitors use the site and to improve content and performance. Google Analytics typically collects information such as:

  • pages visited and time spent on pages
  • referral source (how you found our site)
  • device and browser information
  • approximate location
  • interactions with site content

Google Analytics may use cookies or similar technologies to collect and process this information.

Advertising

We do not currently serve third-party display ads, but we may implement advertising in future using platforms such as Google AdSense, Mediavine, or Ezoic.

If/when enabled, advertising partners may use cookies or similar technologies to:

  • show ads that may be relevant to you
  • limit how often you see the same ad
  • measure advertising performance

Advertising partners may collect or receive information such as IP address, device identifiers, and browsing activity on this site. Their use of information is governed by their own privacy policies.

Affiliate links and tracking

Some pages include affiliate links. If you click an affiliate link and make a purchase, we may receive a commission at no extra cost to you.

We participate in affiliate programs and networks including (but not limited to):

  • Amazon Associates
  • AWIN
  • AliExpress affiliate programs / networks
  • and other similar affiliate platforms

These programs may use cookies or tracking parameters to attribute your purchase to our link. This may involve collecting technical information such as device/browser details and referral data.

Spam protection and security (Akismet and reCAPTCHA)

We use Akismet to help detect spam comments. This may involve processing technical data such as your IP address, browser user agent, and comment details.

We may also implement Google reCAPTCHA in future to help protect forms from spam and abuse. If enabled, reCAPTCHA may collect information about your device and interactions with the site to determine whether activity appears legitimate.

Cookies and tracking

Cookies are small files stored on your device. We use cookies for core site functions and for analytics, and some third-party services we use (or may use) can also set cookies.

WordPress cookies

If you leave a comment, you may opt-in to saving your name, email address and website in cookies for your convenience. These cookies last for one year.

If you visit our login page, we set a temporary cookie to determine if your browser accepts cookies. This cookie contains no personal data and is discarded when you close your browser.

When you log in, we set cookies to save your login information and display preferences. Login cookies last for two days, and screen options cookies last for a year. If you select “Remember Me”, your login persists for two weeks. If you log out, login cookies are removed.

If you edit or publish an article, an additional cookie may be saved in your browser. This cookie includes no personal data and indicates the post ID of the article you edited. It expires after 1 day.

Managing cookies

You can control cookies through your browser settings (for example blocking or deleting cookies). Some features of the site may not work properly if you disable cookies.

Embedded content from other websites

Articles on this site may include embedded content (for example videos, images, or articles). Embedded content behaves as if you visited the other website.

These websites may collect data about you, use cookies, embed additional third-party tracking, and monitor your interaction with embedded content, including if you have an account and are logged in to that website.

Who we share your data with

We share personal information only as needed to operate the site and deliver services. This can include sharing with:

  • website hosting and infrastructure providers
  • Google (Google Analytics and potentially reCAPTCHA and advertising products if enabled)
  • Mailchimp (newsletter delivery and analytics)
  • spam prevention services (Akismet)
  • affiliate networks and partners (for attribution and reporting)
  • IT and support providers involved in maintaining the site

Password resets

If you request a password reset, your IP address may be included in the reset email.

Overseas disclosure (international data transfers)

Because we use service providers such as Google and Mailchimp, and because we have a worldwide audience, personal information may be processed or stored outside your country, including outside Australia (for example in the United States or other regions where these providers operate).

We take reasonable steps to use reputable providers, but overseas recipients may be subject to different privacy laws.

How long we retain your information

  • Comments: If you leave a comment, the comment and its metadata are retained indefinitely to help recognise and approve follow-up comments automatically.
  • Registered users (if enabled): If you create an account (if available), we store the personal information you provide in your user profile. You can view, edit, or delete your personal information at any time (except you cannot change your username). Site administrators can also view and edit that information.
  • Forms and enquiries: We keep enquiries for as long as needed to respond and manage records, and then may delete or de-identify them unless we need to keep them for legal, security, or operational purposes.
  • Newsletter: We keep your subscription details until you unsubscribe or ask us to delete them, subject to any legal or record-keeping requirements.

Your rights

You may request access to the personal information we hold about you, ask us to correct it, or ask us to delete it in certain circumstances.

If you have an account on this site, or have left comments, you can request an exported file of the personal data we hold about you. You can also request we erase personal data we hold about you. This does not include data we are required to keep for administrative, legal, or security purposes.

Because we have a worldwide audience, additional rights may apply depending on where you live (for example rights to object to certain processing or request data portability). If you believe you have additional rights, contact us and we will respond as required by applicable law.

Where your data is sent

Visitor comments may be checked through an automated spam detection service.
